FDA Declares End to Wegovy and Ozempic Shortage — But Is It Really Over?

If you’ve been on a GLP-1 medication like Wegovy or Ozempic, chances are you’ve faced frustrating delays, backorders, or the classic “we’re out of stock” from your local pharmacy. So when the FDA announced that the shortages have officially ended, many people breathed a sigh of relief.
But here’s the truth: the reality on the ground tells a different story.

What the FDA’s Announcement Really Means
In March 2025, the FDA updated its Drug Shortages Database and removed Wegovy and Ozempic from the list. While this might sound like great news (and in theory, it is), it doesn’t mean that supply issues are completely resolved for patients.
The FDA’s decision is based on manufacturer reports, not pharmacy stock or patient access. If the manufacturer is producing enough doses at the national level to meet projected demand, the drug may be removed from the shortage list—even if many pharmacies haven’t received consistent stock yet.
Patients Still Facing Empty Shelves
Despite the announcement, patients across the U.S. (and globally) are still reporting:
Local pharmacies without inventory
Limited availability of certain dosages (especially starting doses)
Long waitlists or delays in auto-refills
Inconsistent communication and understanding from providers
So while technically the shortage may be “over” on paper, the supply chain hasn't caught up with patient demand which is increasing EVERY DAY.
Why the Shortage Isn’t Really Over Yet
There are a few key reasons why access remains limited:
1. Surging Demand
Wegovy and Ozempic have skyrocketed in popularity—not just for type 2 diabetes, but for weight loss. Many doctors are still trying to manage backlogged prescriptions.
2. Dosage-Specific Gaps
Even if higher doses are more available, starter doses are often out of stock, making it hard for new patients to begin treatment safely.
3. Distribution Delays
Manufacturers may have resumed production, but that doesn’t guarantee all pharmacies, especially smaller or rural ones, are fully restocked.

What You Can Do as a Patient
If you're struggling to find your medication, here are a few steps to try:
Check multiple pharmacies, including smaller, independent ones
Ask your provider if you can switch to a different dose or brand temporarily
Look into compounding pharmacies (though be sure they're FDA-compliant)
Stay connected to updates and support groups to hear what’s working for others
Don’t Be Misled by Headlines
At The GLP-1 Source, we’re all about real talk and reliable updates. While it's great that production is back on track, access for patients is still far from consistent.
So if you're still calling around and coming up short—you're not alone.
We'll keep you updated with the latest and help you navigate this confusing season, one refill at a time!
