Let's Be Real... These Side Effects Can Be Rough
Let’s be honest for a second.. GLP-1 medications like Ozempic, Wegovy, or Mounjaro are amazing for weight loss. The results some people are seeing are absolutely life-changing. But let’s also keep it real: the side effects? Not so fun.
Nausea? Constipation? Fatigue that makes you want to stay in bed all day? Yep, I’ve been there. And so have a lot of people. But here's the good news. There are ways to manage those side effects without giving up on your progress.
Nausea: The #1 Complaint
If you’re feeling queasy or like food just sits in your stomach forever, you’re not alone. GLP-1 meds slow down digestion to help you feel fuller longer. Which is great in theory, but it can lead to some serious stomach discomfort if you eat too much or too fast.
Here’s what helped me (and a lot of others):
Smaller meals: Think light and frequent, not big and heavy.
Bland foods at first: Rice, bananas, toast, plain chicken. Boring, but effective.
Avoid greasy and spicy foods: At least in the beginning.
Ginger everything: Ginger tea, ginger chews, or ginger capsules can work wonders.
Most people find that once they slow down their eating and stick to gentle foods, the nausea gets better pretty quickly.

Constipation: The Problem Nobody Wants to Talk About
Yep, it’s super common. And honestly, it makes perfect sense. Since GLP-1 slows digestion, food moves through your system way more slowly. Add in less water and fiber than usual, and your gut comes to a halt. Not fun.
Here’s what made a big difference:
Eat more fiber: Think leafy greens, berries, chia seeds, whole grains, and psyllium husk.
Hydrate like it’s your job: Aim for at least 2–3 liters of water a day.
Magnesium citrate: If things are really stuck, this supplement can help get things moving.
Most people feel relief within a few days when they get serious about water and fiber. And if it’s really bad, sometimes a short break from the meds can help, but always check with your doctor first.
Fatigue: When the Motivation Just Disappears
This one hit me harder than I expected. You start feeling like your energy has been sucked right out of you. That sluggish, I-don’t-want-to-do-anything kind of tired.
That’s usually because GLP-1 meds can lower blood sugar, even if you’re not diabetic. And if you’re not eating enough protein and complex carbs, your body starts running on empty.
Here’s what helped:
Eat enough protein: Aim for 20–30 grams with every meal.
Add complex carbs: Sweet potatoes, quinoa, oats, brown rice. They give you steady energy.
Move, even a little: A short walk can boost energy and improve how your body uses insulin.
Fruit helps too: Two to four servings a day gave me a little extra lift.
Once I found the right balance of protein and carbs, my energy came back. And so did my motivation to stay on track.
Muscle Loss: The Hidden Side Effect
No one really talks about this one, but it matters. When you lose weight quickly, especially without enough protein or resistance training, a lot of that loss can be muscle, not fat. That’s a problem.
Why? Because muscle helps keep your metabolism high. Less muscle means slower metabolism, and that makes it easier to gain the weight back later.
Here’s what you can do:
Protein, again: 1 gram per kg of body weight, and 20–30 grams per meal.
Strength training: 2–3 times a week with exercises like squats, push-ups, and deadlifts.
Supplement if needed: If you’re not hitting your protein goal, a shake or Greek yogurt can help fill in the gaps.
Preserving muscle is one of the best things you can do to keep the weight off long term.

Hair Loss: The Surprise Nobody Warned You About
Hair loss during weight loss can feel devastating. And while GLP-1 meds aren’t directly to blame, rapid weight loss in general can shock your system. Your body focuses on what’s essential. And sadly, hair growth isn’t on that list.
Here’s how to support your hair:
Boost your protein intake: Yep, again. It really is that important.
Take a multivitamin: Look for one with iron, zinc, and biotin.
Try a prenatal vitamin: A lot of women find this helpful during rapid weight loss.
Be patient: Hair loss is usually temporary and stops once your body adjusts.
You Don’t Have to Suffer to Succeed
The side effects from GLP-1 meds are real, but so are the solutions. With the right strategy, you can stay consistent, feel better, and get the amazing results these medications can deliver.
If you’re dealing with nausea, constipation, fatigue, hair loss, or muscle loss, don’t panic. These fixes have helped tons of people (including me) and they can work for you too.
